Internal Medicine Residency

Mission Statement

Palmetto General Hospital’s Internal Medicine Residency Program’s mission is to
form physicians that will help improve people’s lives through excellence in the
science & art of health care & healing while enhancing and nurturing the culture of
diversity in our community.

Describe what the program will be/is doing to achieve/ensure diversity in resident/fellow recruitment and retention.

Our program, in partnership with our sponsoring institution, engages in practices that focus on non-biassed systematic recruitment of residents and fellows. Our goal is to ensure diversity and inclusion during our recruitment process and focus on continuing inclusiveness throughout our residency.

We implement a holistic approach to interviews and incorporate structured interviews ensuring that all questions are standardized for all applicants. Program recruitment committees educate interviewers regarding common biases and interviewer mistakes and are trained in skills to identify and overcome such biases.

Our program greatly values diversity and encourages applicants from all backgrounds to apply. We consider each and every candidate and consider applications on a case-by-case basis through standardized inclusion criteria. We have a no discrimination policy.

Describe what the program will be/is doing to achieve/ensure diversity in the individuals participating in the program (e.g. faculty members, administrative personnel).

In our residency program, we focus on promoting diversity which encompasses multiple factors such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, and disability. We are extremely proud of all aspects of diversity represented by our current faculty, graduate medical education staff, and residents. We feel that all residents, faculty, and staff feel included and currently participate in various committees of their choice in our program and hospital.

We encourage and look forward to continuing to expand participation and inclusion of our diverse program in years to come. Our ultimate goal is to ensure the success of our trainees that come fromall different backgrounds and to encourage our inclusion and diversity culture in their future practice.
